WSRep Reading Series: The Burlesque Astronomy Play
The Burlesque Astronomy Play Written by Sheila Cowley Directed by Miriam Naponelli Presented by WSRep Reading Series NOV 11 @ 7p FREE ADMISSION “The Burlesque Astronomy Play” explores the challenges that women face when balancing career and femininity, and the struggle of immigrants to feel at home. Andi’s an astronomer trying to find a way off this planet when she meets Cal, an artist thoroughly enjoying Earth. As they tangle with connections and clashes between art and science, Andi starts investigating her femininity the only way she knows how – through the scientific process. Sheila Cowley is a playwright and audio producer based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her plays embrace many art forms, creating theatre that celebrates voice, movement, sound, visual art and circus artistry. It’s theatre that asks big questions – about gender roles and family, and tiny daily acts of heroism. Her plays range from “Flying,” about women who flew US military planes in WWII, to “The Burlesque Astronomy Play,” exploring femininity with dance, abstract art, and onstage science experiments. Her work has been produced around the U.S. and in London, South Korea, Sydney, and Dubai. She’s currently collaborating with actors, dancers, and visual artists on works involving science, gender, gravity, and border walls. The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance named her the city’s Literary Muse 2018. Dramatists Guild, Chicago Dramatists Network, New Play Exchange. www.sdcowley.com
