Patients with Thalassemia must undergo difficult treatment to survive\, which includes bimonthly transfusions and chelating in-order to fight iron toxicity. Although many patients are living longer\, they are afflicted with many secondary conditions including heart disease\, pulmonary hypertension\, diabetes\, hepatitis C\, HIV and osteoporosis. The Cooley's Anemia Foundation is a non-for-profit organizations dedicated to helping patients get the proper care needed to survive\, and hopefully someday through fundraising for research\, find a cure. People born with a severe form of Thalassemia require blood transfusions as often as every two weeks. The need for the blood transfusions is caused by red blood cells that do not form properly and cannot carry sufficient oxygen. These transfusions are necessary to provide the patient with a temporary supply of healthy red blood cells with normal hemoglobin capable of carrying the oxygen that the patient's body needs. This makes them the largest single consumers of blood products in the United States. \n\nFor more information about this event and for purchasing tickets in advance or at the door for the Cooley?s Anemia Foundation 2nd Annual Fundraiser\, please contact Teresa Tomaino\, President\, Chicago Chapter\, Cooley?s Anemia Foundation at (630) 337-8492-Cell Phone\, tri-2000@att.net or Jean LaSpisa\, Vice President (847) 431-1819.
